Al Gore, Jr.,

51, vice president, announced his candidacy for president in June. While his pronouncement was not much of a surprise, many were taken aback by Gore's repeated attacks on President Clinton's character, apparently attempts to distance himself from the scandalous president. He also tried to perk up his lackluster speaking style, though only the volume of his voice was affected.
