Billy Butlin

(Sir William Edmund Butlin)

Birthplace: South Africa

A veteran of World War I, he worked for a fun fair briefly before beginning his own business of vacation camps. He opened his first camp at Skegness in 1936, followed by others at Clacton and Filey, and still more after World War II. He was knighted in 1964.
