Birthplace: Nellore, India

Synthesis of vitamin B₁—Williams isolated thiamine in crystalline form and synthesized vitamin B₁. He was instrumental in achieving enrichment of flour, cornmeal and other cereal grains, helping to eliminate pellagra and riboflavin deficiency among poor people. He also invented processes for making submarine insulation. (1991)
