Robert Hutchings Goddard

Birthplace: Worcester, Mass.

Control mechanism for rocket apparatus—Goddard launched the first liquid-fuel rocket in 1926. Other rocket design developments led to the bazooka and rocket-assisted takeoff of carrier planes. (1979)
