America's most famous astronomer, who specialized in exobiology, the field of biology that investigates extraterrestrial life, wrote more than 20 books, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Dragons of Eden, Intelligent Life in the Universe, and Mars and the Mind of Man. His 1980 PBS series, Cosmos, remains the most-watched program in public-television history. Died: 12/20/1996
