Llanelli (hlänĕhlˈē, lănĕthˈlē) [key], town (1981 pop. 45,336), Carmarthenshire, S Wales, on the estuary of the Loughor (Burry) River. The town's industries include tin-plate works and steelworks. Pottery, glass, and chemicals are also made. Coal was formerly mined and exported from Llanelli; the docks closed in 1951. Nearby is the coastal town of Burry Port, where Amelia Earhart landed after her Atlantic crossing.
