Gruyère, La

Gruyère, La (lä grüyĕrˈ) [key], district (1990 pop. 33,080) in Fribourg canton, W Switzerland. It is famous for its cattle and for Gruyère cheese. The population is largely French-speaking and Roman Catholic.
