Emser, Hieronymus

Emser, Hieronymus hēˌĕrōˈnümo͝os ĕmˈzər [key], 1477–1527, German Roman Catholic theologian. He was secretary to the elector of Saxony and urged reform of clerical abuse. In 1519 his enmity with Luther began; he and Luther indulged in the most violent invective, mainly on the subject of Luther's translation of the New Testament. Emser published his own translation in 1527.
