Brewer's: Æolic Digamma

Æol′ic Digamma

An ancient Greek letter (Ϝ), sounded like our w. Thus oinos with the digamma was sounded woinos; whence the Latin vinum, our wine. Gamma, or g, was shaped thus Г, hence digamma = double g.
