The Slums of Beverly Hills

Updated June 26, 2020 | Infoplease Staff
Director/Writer: Tamara Jenkins
Fox Searchlight; R; 91 minutes
Release: 8/98
Cast: Natasha Lyonne, Alan Arkin, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Corrigan, Carl Reiner, Rita Moreno, David Krumholtz and Jessica Walter

Lyonne is a rising star who handles writer/director Jenkins' comically affectionate and often embarrassing coming-of-age tale with style and grace. The only daughter of divorced father (Arkin), Vivian blossoms sexually, though somewhat awkwardly, despite constant needling and embarrassment from her idiosyncratic family. She's aided in her awakening by her cousin, Rita (Tomei), and her Charles Manson-obsessed neighbor (Corrigan). Jenkins' autobiographical film perfectly captures adolescent uncertainty and angst.
