Kelud, Mount

Kelud, Mount (kulOOd) [key], Bahasa Indonesia, Gunung Kelud, active volcano, 5,643 ft (1,720 m) high, central East Java prov., Indonesia, SE of Kediri and NE of Blitar; also known as Mt. Kelut. Lahars caused by its crater lake and pyroclastic flows make Mt. Kelud's eruptions particularly dangerous; drainage tunnels have been constructed since 1926 to lower the lake's level. Its 1586 eruption is estimated to have killed 10,000 people; in 1919 more than 5,000 died.
