Sylhet

Sylhet (silhet') [key], city (1991 pop. 117,398), E Bangladesh, on the Surma River. It is the administrative center for a district of rice and tea cultivation; there is extensive limestone quarrying. The city has an international airport. Sylhet, which has manufactures in tea, matches, vegetable oil, and canes, is also a center of Islamic culture and the site of several tombs of Muslim holy men. In the city are eight colleges affiliated with the Univ. of Chittagong.
