Melville Island

Melville Island, c.16,400 sq mi (42,500 sq km), Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Canada, N of Victoria Island; largest of the Queen Elizabeth Islands. Generally hilly (rising to c.1,500 ft/460 m), it has several ice-covered areas in the interior. There are musk oxen on the island. Sir William Parry, the British explorer, visited Melville Island in 1819, and its south coast was explored (1851) by Sir Francis McClintock.
