Reno, Jesse Lee

Reno, Jesse Lee (rē'nō) [key], 182362, Union general in the American Civil War, b. Wheeling, Va. (now W.Va.). He was twice brevetted for his service in the Mexican War. In the Civil War, Reno was made a brigadier general of volunteers (Nov., 1861) and commanded a brigade in Ambrose Burnside's expedition to North Carolina (1861–62). Promoted to major general (July, 1862), he led the 9th Corps at the second battle of Bull Run, at Chantilly, and at South Mt., where he was killed on Sept. 14, 1862. Reno, Nev., was named for him.
