Pechstein, Max

Pechstein, Max (mäks pekh'shtīn) [key], 18811955, German expressionist painter and graphic artist. Early contact with the art of Van Gogh stimulated his development toward expressionism. In 1906, Pechstein joined the Brücke group. His work, less intense and more decorative than that of the other members of the group, gained wide popularity. In 1914 he went to the South Seas, a trip which inspired his Palau Triptych and other works.
