Newton, Gilbert Stuart

Newton, Gilbert Stuart, 17941835, English genre and portrait painter, b. Halifax, N.S., studied in Boston with his uncle Gilbert Stuart, and later abroad. He was greatly influenced by the 17th-century Dutch masters. Representative examples of his art are Yorick and the Grisette; The Window (National Gall., London); and Deserted (Metropolitan Mus.).
