Fuertes, Louis Agassiz

Fuertes, Louis Agassiz (fOOer'tēs) [key], 18741927, American artist and naturalist, b. Ithaca, N.Y., grad. Cornell Univ., 1897. His paintings of birds appear in most of the leading American ornithological works published in the latter half of his lifetime. He is also known for his murals and for his habitat groups at the American Museum of Natural History. With W. H. Osgood he made a scientific expedition to Ethiopia (1926–27); Artist and Naturalist in Ethiopia (1936) is a joint account. Fuertes was killed accidentally a few months after his return.
