Ashi or Asser, Rab (ä'shē, äs'ur) [key], c.352–c.424, Jewish scholar of Babylon. He was a judge, community administrator, and teacher of considerable influence both on contemporary Jewish society and on later scholars, who viewed him as the last of the rabbis to teach independently. He extended the scope of rabbinic law in many areas.
