Quirinal

Quirinal (kwir'inul) [key], one of the seven hills of Rome, NE of Capitoline Hill. It was the site of several ancient shrines and the quarter of the quirites, probably the aristocracy in the first centuries of Roman history. In the 16th cent. a papal palace was built there; known as Quirinal palace, it was the residence of the kings of Italy from 1870 to 1946 and is now the home of the president of Italy.
