WRIGHT, Ashley Bascom, a
Representative from Massachusetts; born in Hinsdale, Berkshire
County, Mass., May 25, 1841; attended the public schools and
Lincoln Academy at Hinsdale; moved to North Adams, Mass., in 1861;
appointed chief deputy collector of internal revenue for the tenth
district of Massachusetts in 1861; resigned in 1865 and engaged in
mercantile pursuits; elected selectman; commissioner for the county
of Berkshire 1884-1887 and chairman for one year; member of the
State executive council in 1890 and 1891; elected as a Republican
to the Fifty-third, Fifty-fourth, and Fifty-fifth Congresses and
served from March 4, 1893, until his death in North Adams,
Berkshire County, Mass., August 14, 1897; chairman, Committee on
Mileage (Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses); interment in
Hinsdale Cemetery.
