WARD, Thomas, a
Representative from New Jersey; born in Newark, N.J., about 1759;
completed preparatory studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar
and commenced practice in Newark, N.J.; served as captain and major
during the Whisky Insurrection in 1794; sheriff of Essex County,
N.J., in 1797; elected one of the judges of the Essex County Court
in 1804 and reelected in 1809; member of the legislative council in
1808 and 1809; elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth and
Fourteenth Congresses (March 4, 1813-March 3, 1817); was senior
officer of the New Jersey Cavalry at the time of his death in
Newark, N.J., March 4, 1842; interment in the churchyard of the
First Presbyterian Church.
