not a candidate for reelection to the United States House of
Representatives in 2000; unsuccessful candidate for Governor in
2000; elected to the U.S. Senate in the November 5, 2002, special
election to the term ending January 3, 2007, a seat previously held
by appointed Senator Jean Carnahan, and took office on November 23,
2002; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 2006.
