1893-1899Party: DemocratSMITH, James, Jr., a
Senator from New Jersey; born in Newark, N.J., June 12, 1851;
attended private schools and St. Mary’s College, Wilmington,
Del.; engaged in the dry-goods and importing business, later
becoming a manufacturer of leather in Newark, N.J.; member of the
board of aldermen of Newark 1883-1887; declined the nomination for
mayor of Newark in 1884; president of the first board of works of
Newark; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and
served from March 4, 1893, to March 3, 1899; was not a candidate
for reelection; chairman, Committee on the Organization, Conduct
and Expenditures of Executive Departments (Fifty-third Congress);
resumed the manufacture of leather, and also engaged in banking and
newspaper publishing; unsuccessful candidate for election to the
United States Senate in 1911; died in Newark, N.J., April 1, 1927;
interment in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery.
