SCHLEICHER, Gustave, a
Representative from Texas; was born in Darmstadt, Germany, on
November 19, 1823; attended the University of Giessen; became a
civil engineer and was employed in the construction of several
European railroads; immigrated to the United States in 1847 and
settled in San Antonio, Tex., in 1850; member of the State house of
representatives in 1853 and 1854; served in the State senate
1859-1861; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and
Forty-fifth Congresses and served from March 4, 1875, until his
death; chairman, Committee on Railways and Canals (Forty-fifth
Congress); had been reelected in 1878 to the Forty-sixth Congress;
died in Washington, D.C., January 10, 1879; interment in the United
States National Cemetery, San Antonio, Tex.
