Ariz., July 18, 1940; graduated from Tempe High School, Tempe,
Ariz., 1958; B.A., Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz., 1962;
M.P.A., Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz., 1980; teacher;
professor; Tempe city council, 1970-1978; mayor of Tempe,
1978-1994; member of the Arizona senate, 1999-2006; Arizona
Democratic Party chairman, 2006-2006; elected as a Democrat to the
One Hundred Tenth Congress and to the succeeeding Congress (January
3, 2007-January 3, 2011); unsuccessful candidate for reelection to
the One Hundred Twelfth Congress in 2010.
