CRAIG, James, a
Representative from Missouri; born in Washington County, Pa.,
February 28, 1818; attended the public schools; moved to Mansfield,
Ohio, in 1821; studied law; and was admitted to the bar in New
Philadelphia, Ohio, in 1839; moved to St. Joseph, Mo., in 1844,
where he commenced the practice of law; captain of a volunteer
company in the Mexican War and served until 1848; State’s
attorney for the twelfth judicial circuit 1852-1856; member of the
State house of representatives in 1856 and 1857; elected as a
Democrat to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses (March 4,
1857-March 3, 1861); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in
1860; resumed the practice of law; was commissioned brigadier
general of Volunteers by President Lincoln March 21, 1862; was the
first president of the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad and the
first comptroller of the city of St. Joseph; died in St. Joseph,
Mo., October 22, 1888; interment in Mount Mora Cemetery.
