BURRILL, James, Jr., (great-grandfather of Theodore Francis Green), a Senator from Rhode Island; born in Providence, R.I., April 25, 1772; graduated from Rhode Island College (now Brown University) at Providence in 1788; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1791 and commenced practice in Providence; attorney general of Rhode Island 1797-1814; member, State house of representatives 1813-1816 and served as speaker 1814-1816; chief justice of the State supreme court in 1816; elected to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1817, until his death in Washington, D.C., December 25, 1820; chairman, Committee on Judiciary (Fifteenth Congress); funeral services were held in the Chamber of the United States Senate; interment in Congressional Cemetery.
