BROWN, George Houston, a
Representative from New Jersey; born in Lawrenceville, N.J.,
February 12, 1810; attended the common schools and Lawrenceville
Academy and was graduated from Princeton College in 1828; teacher
in Lawrenceville Academy 1828-1830; studied law at Yale College for
one year and also in a law office in Somerville, N.J.; was admitted
to the bar in 1835 and commenced practice in Somerville; member of
the State council 1842-1845; delegate to the State constitutional
convention in 1844; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second Congress
(March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853); was not a candidate for renomination
in 1852; resumed the practice of law; associate justice of the
supreme court of New Jersey from 1861 until his death in
Somerville, Somerset County, N.J., August 1, 1865; interment in the
Old Cemetery.
