The Question:

Could somebody please tell me the scientific name of the spiny lobster found along the Caribbean shores of Central America (Honduras to Panama)? Thank you sooooo much!

The Answer:

The lobster you are describing is called the Panulirus argus (or spiny lobster) a distant cousin of the Homarus americanus (or Maine lobster—the lobster most common in New England).

The Panulirus argus can be found in the warm waters anywhere from Brazil to Bermuda. They are nocturnal and tend to live in coral reef habitats.

Here is a link to a picture of that lobster type.

For more information, check out the Lobster Institute site at the University of Maine.
