The Question:

When were fortune cookies invented?

The Answer:

The one point on which there is widespread agreement is that fortune cookies were invented in California sometime during the 1910s. Beyond that, there are competing claims. One account credits the invention to Los Angeles noodle manufacturer David Jung in 1918. Another claims that Japanese gardener Makoto Hagiwara invented the cookies in Los Angeles in 1914.
