He gained fame as the dying football player Brian Piccolo in Brian's Song (1971) and as the eldest Corleone son in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972), a role for which he won an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His other films include Freebie and the Bean (1974), Rollerball (1974), Misery (1990) and Mickey Blue Eyes (1999).
