This table provides figures about the 50 most populous nations in the world as of July 2016. China is the most populous country with more than 1.4 billion residents. Since India's population is close behind China at 1.3 billion, there could be a time when India surpasses its neighbor country in population. The estimated population of the world is 7.5 billion as of 2017.
The majority of the population is located in the eastern half of the country.
