Doctors Announce Birth of First Healthy Three-Parent Baby

On Sept. 27, 2016, New Scientist announces that a 5-month-old baby boy is the result of successful DNA manipulation called spindle nuclear transfer (SNT). The child is special because he is a combination of the DNA of three separate people, meaning he has three parents. The parents of the child decided to use this method of DNA manipulation after their first two children died from a genetic mitochondrial disease passed down by their mother. SNT is achieved by removing the nucleus of the mother's eggs and inserting it into a donor egg—that also has had its nucleus removed. Then the resulting egg is fertilized with the father's sperm. The procedure was performed in Mexico by a team led by American Dr. John Zhang due to U.S. regulations.
