- Boko Haram Releases 21 Chibok Schoolgirls
- On Oct. 13, 2016, Boko Haram, an Islamic militant group in Nigeria, releases 21 of the 276 girls who were kidnapped in April 2014. This is the first mass release of the girls. The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Swiss government helped bring the deal about after a series of negotiations between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government. The return of the girls occurs around dawn in the town of Banki, near Cameroon.
