- First U.S. Casualty in Syria
- On November 24, 2016, the first U.S. casualty occurs in Syria. The Associated Press reports the service member as Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott C. Dayton, who worked for the U.S. Special Forces stationed in Syria. Dayton dies from wounds sustained by an ISIS IED. The attack occurs in Ayn Issa, 30 miles north of ISIS's self-declared capital of Raqqa. Defense Secretary Ash Carter states, "I am deeply saddened by the news on this Thanksgiving Day that one of our brave service members has been killed in Syria while protecting us from the evil of ISIS."
