On Dec. 9, 2016, South Korean lawmakers vote to impeach President Park Geun-hye, the first female president of South Korea. The decision comes after allegations of corruption surfaced in October that President Park had been significantly influenced by her friend Ms. Choi regarding high level government decisions. On Dec. 9, formal documents are passed to the Blue House, making Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn the official acting president; in the next few weeks, the country's Constitutional Court will rule on whether or not Park has to step down permanently.
