  • Oct. 12, Aden, Yemen: U.S. Navy destroyer USS Cole was heavily damaged when a small boat loaded with explosives blew up alongside it. Seventeen sailors were killed in what was apparently a deliberate terrorist attack.
  • Oct. 16–18, Switzerland, France, and Italy: Heavy rains in the Alpine region of Switzerland, France, and Italy caused flooding and rock- and mudslides, which left more than 2 dozen people dead and forced the evacuation of thousands more.
  • Oct. 31, Taipei, Taiwan: Los Angeles–bound Singapore Airlines jet with 179 people aboard crashed on takeoff from Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, killing 81.
