On this date in 1961, the massive Hurricane Carla hit land near Port Lavaca, Texas early in the morning. The large storm moved slowly and dumped well over a foot of rain on the central Texas coast. Winds gusted up to 175 mph and spawned a deadly tornado on Galveston Island. The storm claimed 43 lives in all and and caused an estimated $300 million in damages.
