On this date in 1888, a massive blizzard struck the northeast United States. New York City, because of its population density (even way back then), was particularly hard hit. Of the more than 400 storm-related deaths, 200 occurred in New York City. Upwards of 21 inches fell in New York City, but it was the frigid temperatures and blistering winds that made things so bad, resulting in snow drifts more than 20 feet deep. Other areas in the Northeast received upwards of 55 inches of snow from the famous 1888 blizzard.
