On this date in 1987, heavy rains struck eastern New York State and ten people died in a bridge collapse on a stretch of I-90 spanning Schoharie Creek near Amsterdam, New York. Two spans of the bridge fell into the flood waters after a pier which supported them was swept away. Before motorists could be warned, five vehicles plunged into the creek and 10 people were killed.
