    On this date in 1926, the "Miami Hurricane" struck in the middle of the night. The high winds (138 mph) and high tides (12 feet above normal) combined to kill 240 people before the storm abated. Many people perished when they left shelter while the storm's eye passed overhead unaware that the killer storm was far from through with the beachfront town.
