    On this date in 2001, a snowstorm near Washington, DC, contributed to one of the largest highway pileups in U.S. history. The poor visibility and slippery roads combined to start a chain reaction of accidents that involved 116 vehicles on Interstate 95 near Stafford, Va. The pileup claimed one life and injured dozens of other motorists.
