What do you do? Develop and implement Business Development strategies , manage sales initiatives , and sell. What skills are needed? Excellent communication, leadership, and problem solving skills are essential to success in business development. The ability to work on a team, take risks, and multi-task will help one succeed. What was your major? English . How did you get started in your career? I was a four-year INROADS intern working for Procter & Gamble . What experience do you need in this job? Procter & Gamble typically hires at the entry-level position and requires leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving experience. Internships and extra-curricular leadership positions are the best way to prove you have the proven experiences to succeed on the job. Describe your "typical" workday: Each day is different and this is what I love most about the job. Typically, I come in early check email and voicemail to see if any emergencies arose with a product launch. I review my to do list which includes working with various functions like R&D, Marketing, and Product Supply throughout the day. My daily objective is to continue the development of a product that consumers with love and customers (retails) will carry on their store shelves. My role in achieving this objective is to represent the sales function on a national product team and ensure that we are able to sell our products to retailers. I consistently develop sales fundamentals (pricing, shelving, merchandising, and distribution) that ensure our product gets in store and generates consumer purchase. I work in the office on a team and out in the field with the national sales force. This dynamic makes me the liaison between our customers, sales force and P&G product teams. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Time management , I always have one thousand things to do. My challenge is to consistently pick the top 50 and deliver with excellence. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Selling, either a customer or an internal person on my product or my idea. Also the knowledge that I played a huge part in delivering a successful product launch What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? If you are in high school, take a sales job and see if you enjoy the art of persuasion . If you are in college, apply for an internship that will teach you how to sell . Spend a day in the field in several different industries, with different levels of salespeople. Understand the difference in selling to a vice president of marketing and selling shoes in a retail store; you may enjoy one and not the other.
