Tell us about your work-what do you do? I am in charge of a branch bank in SE Kansas. I work on budgets , lending , personnel hiring , and anything to do with the operation of the bank. What skills are needed? Be able to work with people from different backgrounds. Have the skills to evaluate financial information. Have a lot of common sense. What was your major? Agriculture/Animal Science with Business Option How did you get started in your career? I took a job as a loan officer and agriculture rep at a bank. What experience do you need in this job? A college degree is usually required. It's helpful to have a varied life experience where you are exposed to different industries , agriculture enterprises , and work situations. Working in a bank even as a part-time teller is also good experience. Describe your "typical" workday: I come in and look at the overdraft list and get ready for the day. I see customers in the bank and sometimes go to someone's farm or business to do a collateral inspection . I will also answer different questions from employees and customers about different bank related business. Some evenings are spent going to meetings and public relations events. What is the hardest aspect of your job? The negative aspects such as loan denials and dealing with unhappy customers are the hardest things I do. They are the hardest things but I enjoy the challenge of explaining the situations to customers to that they understand. They may not agree, but they need to understand. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Approving a loan to allow someone to buy a house, car or start a business, and being a part of someone's dream coming true. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Part-time work in high school or college, and try to get experience in as many areas of the bank as you can.
