Many small businesses can't afford a full time accountant ; therefore, we step in as their account doing monthly financial statements and year end federal and state income taxes . What skills are needed? It's important to be able to arrive at a good understanding of the client's business. You've also got to have thorough knowledge of accounting and taxes. What was your major? Accounting. How did you get started in your career? I worked part time in public accounting while I was attending college. What experience do you need in this job? You need a strong accounting background and the ability to understand business problems and to be able to offer solutions to those problems. Describe your "typical " workday: I visit clients and obtain accounting information. Then I go back to the office to work up the information into monthly financial statements. I spend a lot of time on the phone, answering the questions of clients who call. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Getting people to understand the requirements of keeping good records. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Solving problems for businesses. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Realize that one of the most important skills is to be able to read technical information and be able to apply that information to everyday business problems.
