AnonomysTell us about your work-what do you do? I am an accredited business accountant , accredited tax advisor , and enrolled agent . Being a self- employed public accountant , I do accounting , bookkeeping , and tax work for small businesses and individuals. I prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements , payroll and sales taxes , and income taxes . What skills are needed? A business degree from a college or university, with an emphasis in accounting and finance . A basic understanding of how certain businesses operate. Good communication skills with the ability to listen to your client's needs. What was your major? Accounting How did you get started in your career? I worked for my father's public accounting office as a teenager, and then later while a college student. What experience do you need in this job? I believe that it is necessary to work in several public accounting practices. That way you get a well-rounded view of different industries and different practices. Working in private industry with controllership functions, also gives you that different level of perspective that is very helpful in public practice. Describe your "typical" workday: Visiting clients, picking up their information, doing bank reconciliation's , general ledger write-up work, preparing tax returns , answering client's questions, researching tax problems and questions, talking with bankers, insurance agents, and attorneys. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Explaining tax laws and requirements to tax clients. Trying to answer the questions from clients, as to why the tax laws are the way that they are. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Being able to give good advice to clients, so they can save some of their hard-earned money. Someone having faith and trust in your knowledge and abilities is very rewarding to me. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Definitely get some experience in public practice , small to medium sized firms can help teach you a lot about the compliance requirements for small and large businesses. Having your accounting degree will give you great background and will save you learning time on the job.
