New England Patriots defeat Philadelphia Eagles, 24-21, 2004 Season
Super Bowl XXXIX MVP Deion Branch
Super Bowl XXXIX was close throughout with the score tied at 14 to start the fourth quarter. However, early in that fourth quarter, the Patriots quickly scored a touchdown, a 2-yard pass to Corey Dillon, and a 22-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri. The Eagles were able to strike back with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb to Greg Lewis, but could not complete the comeback. Therefore, the New England Patriots became the only team besides the Dallas Cowboys to win three Super Bowls in four years. The Patriots were also the first team to win consecutive Super Bowls since the Denver Broncos in 1997-1998. Patriots wide receiver Deion Branch (pictured above) was named MVP. He tied the previous Super Bowl record for 11 catches. He also set the record for most receptions in two consecutive Super Bowls with 21. Along with Joe Namath and Fred Biletnikoff, Branch became the third offensive player to win the Super Bowl MVP without scoring or throwing a touchdown.
