Voted on by panel of 70 sportswriters & broadcasters and released on Jan. 5, 1999, following the Fiesta Bowl: winning team receives the Bear Bryant Trophy, given since 1983; first place votes in parentheses, records, total points (based on 25 for 1st, 24 for 2nd, etc.) bowl game result, head coach and career record, preseason rank (released on Aug. 16, 1998) and final regular season rank (released Dec. 6, 1998).
