Born on October 9, 1935, the Duke of Kent, Edward George Nicholas Paul Patrick, is a cousin to both the Queen and Prince Philip.

A qualified interpreter of French, the Duke was educated at Eton and Le Rosey school in Switzerland. He then entered the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, where he won a foreign language prize.

He married Katharine Worsley, youngest child and only daughter of Sir William and Lady Worsley in 1961. They have three children: George, Earl of St Andrews, born in 1962; Lady Helen Taylor, born in 1964; and Lord Nicholas Windsor, born in 1970. None of their children carry out official royal duties. Since the Earl of St. Andrews married a Catholic, he gave up his right to the throne. The other children, however, remain in the line of succession.

The Duke, however, is involved with some 100 organizations, including the British Computer Society, the Leukemia Research Fund, and numerous sports groups.
