Cho Seung-Hui committed the deadliest single shooting act in American history when he shot and killed 32 people and then himself at Virginia Tech University on 16 April 2007. Cho was a student at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia when he armed himself with pistols and went on a shooting rampage at the university on a Monday morning. He shot and killed two people in a dormitory, West Ambler Johnston Hall, then two hours later entered Norris Hall, an engineering building across campus, and killed 30 more students and professors. According to a news release from Virginia Tech, Cho was 23 and was "enrolled as an undergraduate student in his senior year as an English major at Virginia Tech. Cho, a South Korean native, was in the U.S. as a resident alien with a residence established in Centerville, Virginia." ABC News reported that Cho "killed two people in a dorm room, returned to his own dorm room where he re-armed and left a 'disturbing note' before entering a classroom building on the other side of campus to continue his rampage." After committing the killings, Cho shot himself to death in Norris Hall.

The previous deadliest campus shooting was committed by Charles Whitman, who killed 16 people with a rifle from the observation deck of a clock tower at the University of Texas in Austin on 1 August 1966… Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is the full formal name of Virginia Tech… The Washington Post reported in August of 2007 that Cho had been treated for a social anxiety disorder called selective mutism while in high school, but that federal law prevented school officials from passing this information to Virginia Tech.
